Howes Percival’s new ‘In-Howes’ programme of training and networking events aimed at in-house lawyers has been hailed as a huge success. The first session in Milton Keynes attracted over 20 attendees from a wide range of different sectors including retail, technology, pharmaceutical, travel and leisure and automotive, and included a number of listed and multinational companies from a wide geographic spread .
At this inaugural event, which was hosted by Howes Percival Partner, Simon deMaid, attendees received a masterclass in contract law from experts at Howes Percival and guest speakers from Maitland Chambers – one of the UK’s leading sets of barristers’ chambers for commercial matters.
The ‘Contract Masterclass’ kicked-off with a presentation by Howes Percival’s Corporate and Commercial Partner, Edward Lee, on the effects of the UK’s decision to leave the EU and the issues that need to be considered when negotiating and reviewing contracts and, the possible long-term options for future trade with the EU post Brexit.
Satnam Chayra, Howes Percival Partner and litigation expert, presented a session on termination of contracts, looking at do’s and don’ts of termination clauses and how to achieve a clean break.
Guest speakers from Maitland Chambers, Catherine Newman QC and Mark Cunningham QC, provided a commercial case law update, taking attendees through recent cases that are likely to have an effect on the way contracts are drafted and interpreted.
Commenting on the event, host Simon deMaid said, “Our inaugural ‘In-Howes’ event was a great success and feedback from attendees was excellent. Our events are designed and presented by lawyers who are experts in their field. Through ‘In-Howes’ our aim is to provide attendees with essential technical knowledge - keeping them abreast of emerging legislation and current legal issues - as well as offering them practical business solutions and the opportunity to network with fellow in-house lawyers.”
