A team of Howes Percival lawyers took on the mighty Leicester Cobras wheelchair basketball team in a unique charity challenge match.
The one-off charity match took place at the Leicester Arena and raised over £3,000 for the Cobras, who will use the funds to purchase a specially adapted sports wheelchair.
The Howes Percival squad on the evening comprised; Chris Rees, James Dent, Jasmine Mason, Owen Broughton, Max Galt, Gabriella Harrison and Andrew Swarbrick. Meanwhile, the match, which eventually saw the Cobras come out narrowly on top, was supported by the great and the good from Leicester’s business community.
Howes Percival partner Chris Rees organised the event: “Wow, that was such a fantastic experience. The Leicester Cobras are an inspiration to all and it was an honour and a privilege to share the court with them. I am very pleased with how it all went. It was a special and unique event and the Leicester business community came out in force (as they always do) and helped raised over £3,000 for the Cobras. That is what it is was all about – raising money and awareness for the Cobras.
“Wheelchair basketball is tough, tough sport. The Cobras make it look easy, but to manoeuvre the wheelchair, with the ball, changing direction, racing up the court and trying to shoot while also defending the ball from the opposing side, is incredibly hard work. There were blisters for the uninitiated, but lots of fun too.”
The Howes Percival team were coached by Leicester Riders captain, Tyler Bernardini, who commented: “Well done Howes Percival on organising a fantastic event. It was a pleasure for me to take part and help support the Leicester Cobras. It was also great being able to showcase the new home of basketball in Leicester, at the Leicester Arena. The talent of the Cobras was on display in wonderful fashion and hopefully everyone will keep coming out to support them.”
Emma Hanson of RSM was one of those enjoying the spectacle: “The Howes Percival team put on an amazing event and must have trained for hours to achieve such a close scoreline. The Cobra players are wonderful to watch. I would encourage anyone to go and support them, their speed and agility on the court is incredible.”
Mukesh Bulsara of MHA Macintyre Hudson commented: “It was great to see Chris and the team supporting this very worthy cause and also the Leicester professional community, out in force as well. Wheelchair basketball looks terribly difficult, so all those trying it for the first time performed incredibly well.”
