Since joining the firm as a trainee in September, my first seat being in Commercial Property in Norwich, I have realised the value which Howes Percival places on providing a fun work-life balance in a true team environment. (A cliché I know!)
I feel that this is an element which often people don’t consider when they are applying for training contracts. But by working for a firm which gets everyone involved, it boosts moral and creates a fun and vibrant atmosphere in the office.
When you choose a career in law, there will inevitably be times when the work is stressful and high pressured but having fun events and socialising really does break the week up and give you a chance to put work into perspective. Whilst providing a relaxed opportunity to talk things through with other colleagues.
In my experience as a trainee at HP you are honestly invited to attend all the networking, socialising and team events. There are so many opportunities to do things beyond sitting at your desk! In my six months here I have done everything from punting in Cambridge, to attending the Norwich beer festival to making Christmas wreaths in the office!
Putting names to faces, meeting clients and other professionals such as surveyors, insurance brokers and accountants who you deal with on a day to day basis can be extremely helpful and allow you to work more effectively. Even if they do constantly bring up your terrible bowling skills…
My top tips for getting involved, networking and feeling part of the team are:
- Say yes to everything – even if you’re not the Usain Bolt of running, no one is going to mind!
- Talk to anyone – whether that be the firm’s biggest client or one of your colleagues.
- Engage with members of different teams – you never know when you could need their help or be working with them.
- Smile and be happy – it’s a long working week otherwise!
- Volunteer to help out at events - whether it’s serving drinks or handing out name badges. It makes initial introductions easier and people really appreciate it!
