Having recently started my first seat in Insolvency Department in our Norwich office, I am already taking responsibility for different files and tasks after just a couple of weeks into my seat.
8.30
After a quick commute on my bicycle to the Office, I usually arrive around 8.45am. HP is flexible with no demand to be in very early (work dependant).
After grabbing a coffee from the new machine, I have a chat with my colleagues in my work area before catching up on emails and creating a task list to prioritise my day.
9.15
At the start of the week, a quick team meeting is held detailing any upcoming court dates and other important deadlines.
10.30
Prioritising your workload is key, especially when work can be time sensitive. Working with my supervisor I am already a couple of drafts into a Letter before Action. After finishing the final draft and it being approved, it is sent off to the client for consideration.
11.30
I am tasked with building an exhibit for an upcoming case regarding public interest winding up petition. To enable me to complete my task effectively, I have a breakout with a senior fee earner to discuss how to approach building an exhibit.
If you don’t know where to start or how to approach a task a fee earner is always happy to give you guidance or answer a few quick questions.
13.00
Trainees and newly qualified solicitors usually meet up for lunch, often by the Cathedral as the office is only a quick walk away. It’s a good opportunity to relax and take a walk from the office. It also gives you the opportunity to your colleagues about what has been going on and to ask for any advice.
14.00
Confirmation has come back from a client regarding the Letter before Action. I get further approval for my supervisor and check the document before getting it ready for the post.
15.00
My supervisor has a client meeting and I attend to take notes, but also to watch and learn how to interact with clients. After the meeting I dictate my notes to be typed up (saving me time and allowing me to get on with other pressing tasks).
15.30
I get assigned a research task concerning directors and insolvency after the earlier meeting. I then start to draft as a letter of advice to the client.
16.30
I get back to building the exhibit, which is going well but will be an ongoing task. It is a useful task, as it enables you to get to know the facts and the witness statement of a case inside out.
17.30
After completing my work, I end the day with a couple of administrative tasks for example, updating my training contract record, writing articles and updating tasks that I need to complete for the next day. I then leave to office to take part in one of our 5-a-side networking events. As well as getting to know different local professional firms, it is also a good way to get to know people in different areas of the office.
