The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) was introduced as part of the UK’s efforts to modernise and digitalise border controls. It applies broadly to visitors who do not require a visa for short stays in the UK or who do not already hold UK immigration status before travelling.
The Home Office has now commenced the final phase of the ETA rollout by opening applications for European travellers ahead of its mandatory implementation. From 5 March 2025, eligible European visitors can apply for an ETA, and from 2 April 2025, they will need one to travel to the UK.
This expansion follows the successful rollout of the ETA to non-European nationals, including travellers from the USA, Canada, and Australia, with an estimated 1.1 million ETA’s issued to date.
An ETA costs £10, and the application process is fully online. Travellers can apply quickly and easily via the ‘UK ETA’ app through their smartphone. Those without a smartphone can apply online by searching ‘Apply for an Electronic Travel Authorisation to come to the UK’ on GOV.UK. Applicants must provide biographic and biometric details (including a facial scan) and answer questions related to suitability and criminality.
While most applications are processed quickly, travellers are advised to allow up to three working days for a decision. Once approved, the ETA is electronically linked to the traveller’s passport, eliminating the need for any physical documentation.
The digital permission allows multiple trips to the UK and remains valid for two years or until the passport expires – whichever comes first.
